in this fiscal cliff standoff. we have team fox coverage. mike emanuel is live on capitol hill. but first to ed henry at the white house. ed, it looks as if we are taking the plunge. >> it does, trace. but what i think the white house is hoping here tonight is that lawmakers are going to have some framework by midnight tonight that basically says votes as soon as tomorrow or maybe even in early wee hours, 1:00 a.m., 2:00 a.m. to start moving forward on this so at least the markets get the signal that they will retroactively make sure that the tax rates don't go up. that the massive spending cuts don't take effect. all of this is still hanging in the balance. as you mentioned, conservatives not happy that there are no new spending cuts here. liberals not happy over the fact that they believe the president gave in too much to republicans on taxes setting a threshold of $450,000 a year instead of what they wanted which was 250,000. bottom line the president said that's the art of the compromise today. everyone is not going to get everything that they want. and, in fact, he said the key here is to

a smaller offer. for the latest, we bring in peter alexander from the white house and mike viqueira from capitol hill. peter, let's talk about what's going on at the white house meeting. i hear senators are optimistic about a mini deal which, of course, will raise taxes on those above $400,000. expand the amt, cut some spending. what are you hearing? >> reporter: well, hearing a lot of different things right now. one of the items and ruled by rumor and then denials and frustrations, toure. we know that we saw senators mcconnell and reid arriving a short time ago. we didn't pelosi and boehner arrive yet but the vice president joe biden got here a short time ago, as well. there's other reporting from the hill right now about the potential that the president is going to return to what was basically his original outlined plan. perhaps a smaller plan but a plan where the threshold would be set closer to $250,000 as he initially had before the $400,000 offer that john boehner the white house would contend walked away from when he proposed his $1 million threshold in this situation right now. t

congressional correspondent mike emanuel is live at the capitol following all of the bouncing balls. hey, mike. >> reporter: one concern for republicans as they look at this deal is what about spending cuts? where are the spending cuts? it sounds like they are getting close in the talks between vice president joe biden and the senate republican leader mitch mcconnell but there is not a deal until senator mcconnell knows he has enough support. let's take a look at some of the key points of a framework of the deal according to sources close to the talks. it would raise taxes on income tax amounts above $400,000 for individuals, $450,000 for families. it would address the estate tax, the alternative minimum tax, the medicare doc fix and unemployment insurance. current discussions about how best to address the automatic spending cuts that is called sequestration, the automatic cuts to defense, and domestic programs. a short time ago a leading republican expressed a great deal of concern and frustration with the whole process. >> it's december the 31st. january 1st is tomorrow, 2013, taxes go up. e

, although you didn't ask mike i was personally fascinated by that. how much do you think it scarred you or did it just drive you? >> i think it did scar me more than it drove me. what drove me was the fact that my father's life was cut so short. he died at 35 years old. and it was -- he was listed in a book of great leaders of education. he wrote incredible thesises, if there's such a word of just wonderful observations. one of them -- he was a teacher and he also taught at elmyra and he taught english to juvenile delinquents. i could never read that piece till i got much older and had this certain experience. and then i was able to read it. and that was me. in other words, there is so much in the cellular memory or the dna because i never knew him. but at 16, i had discovered chekhov and ibsen and shakespeare. when i finally read my father's thesis, it was how to teach prisoners and delinquents through ibsen and checkov and shakespeare. >> have you been able to find out a lot about him and his character and his life? >> not really. although very mystical things happen. i was doing a co
